In the previous blog post I mentioned we had some great hosts while in Baku, Azerbaijan. The international school counselor was an extremely nice woman named Cheryl but the individual who stole the show was her husband Pat.
Pat is one of the nicest, most generous, outgoing, friendly, and humorous man I've met...he had us laughing all afternoon and evening in Baku. Pat is Irish. Very, very, very Irish. He is from Ireland, and Cheryl introduced him by saying "Pat didn't kiss the Blarney Stone, he swallowed the whole dang thing!" Cheryl is from Arkansas, so they make a great couple. Anyway, Pat was kind of our leader as he went with us to our school visits in Baku and then he led us walking through the streets of central Baku (taking a specific street so we could pass the only Irish pub in Baku, recognized by the Guinness sign outside), the Old City sites, and then kept us laughing at dinner. Unfortunately we had to fly to Tbilisi that evening or I believe we would have all joined Pat at the Irish pub after dinner.
To give you a better idea of who Pat is, here are two of Pat's best jokes:
Dickdo
I was sitting here, enjoying this delicious dinner, and my wife tells me "Pat, be careful or you'll get a dickdo." I said, what my dear is a dickdo? "Well, it's where you eat so much your stomach sticks out further than your dickdo." (laughter ensues)
Critters
A woman is happy if she has four critters in her life. If you can give a lady these four animals she'll love you for the rest of your life.
First, she needs a Jaguar in her garage. She needs a mink in her closet. She needs a tiger in her bed. And then she needs a jackass to pay for it all! (laughter ensues)
And for your viewing pleasure, here is a video of Pat telling the joke:
Not only did Pat take us around the plazas of central Baku and the Old City, he was extremely helpful in crossing Baku's notoriously busy streets. The traffic does not stop, so you cannot hesitate when you cross the streets, and Pat would gather all 15 of us all together and just start walking across the street. One of my colleagues said "He's like Moses parting the Red Sea." Here is a video of Pat parting the traffic so we can cross the street:
So, that is Pat, the Dickdo from Baku, as we joked. Our visit to Azerbaijan wouldn't have been the same without him, especially his knowledge of the city and his sense of humor, all wrapped in an Irish accent. I hope to return to Baku to see Pat again and maybe get to the only Irish pub in Azerbaijan...now that would be an experience!
